Learning Platform for Minority and/or Endangered Languages

Member: Chen Jun (junchen4@connect.hku.hk)

Supervisor: Choi Yi King (ykchoi@cs.hku.hk)

Introduction

This project aims to create a learning platform for lesser-known languages which may be at risk of decline or even outright extinction. While the platform will not provide an in-depth class for such languages, it will give a basic introduction about the languages and their associated cultures which gave raise to such languages.

The target audience for this platform is Hongkongers. While Hongkongers like travelling, many of them tend to stay within the confines of East and Southeast Asia, or the UK and neighbouring parts of Western Europe. The platform aims to increase the cultural competency of its users, as well as global awareness of other cultures and peoples.

The platform will also include a feature to add languages. As the developer works alone, it is impossible to add hundreds of languages by oneself. Inspired by the now-defunct Incubator feature from Duolingo, this platform will encourage speakers of lesser-known languages to add their own thesauruses to the platform, although a review system will be put in place to ensure no vandalism is taking place.
